In the realm of the white shadows

Ausstellung 09.01. - 28.02.2023

The divine habitat nature reinterpreted.

In January 2023, Vienna's BURN-IN Gallery invites you to the REICH DER WEISSSCHATTEN by Tyrolean painter Andrea Langensiepen and presents 20 independent works created between 2010 and 2022.

The major themes of nature and mythology are reflected in many of the artist's works. They transform the art space into an exciting contemporary oasis of incomparable beauty, a place full of silence and contemplation.
Color-intensive meets delicate color sounds, large-format multiples on smaller formats. The white flees sometimes more sometimes less. Sometimes quickly, sometimes with great deliberation. The colors of nature conquer the pictorial space with all their might and create a spectacular tapestry. Deep red meets bright yellow and warm burgundy. Yellow mixes with green and brown. White coquettishly approaches gray and is tangent to rich green and black. Mint, pink, cobalt and apricot set teeny, but all the more sensational accents. The magical color chords spark in the viewer a new kind of sensuality in painting, something superficially diametrical at first glance. They know how to convey a sense of freedom and being ready.

The main works in the exhibition include the diptych And at last I know where I want to be, Quest I-III, Weissschatten I-III, The Hero's Journey, Morpheus I-III and Other Days.

The eponymous short story IN THE REALM OF WHITE SHADOWS also paints an atmospheric picture of the protagonists Chloe and Psyche. It tells of idyllic tranquility, the time of contemplation and departure or change in the seasonal rhythm, the spirituality of paradisiacal gardens and the restlessness under flower white, the radical uprising of botanical cultures.

Lyrical storytelling in art

People love stories, because they touch, anchor themselves in the brains and remain "forever" in memory. This is also shown in a study by Stanford University, which attests to a 22-fold memory performance.

The monomyth, the classic hero's journey (sometimes also referred to as a quest), was researched by American mythologist Joseph Campell and is used in diverse genres (literature, film, coaching, therapy, business). Campell sends his heroes on journeys, subjecting them to great trials, all of which they pass with flying colors. The shining hero reaps the elixir and changes the world with it.

What a beautiful image! As part of the collaboration with Andrea Langensiepen, Sonja Dolzer wrote two lyrical short stories that take you into Langensiepen's cosmos and surprise you with the unexpected. Memorable, emotional stories away from the traditional art historical ways of looking at things.

In2020 CHLOES PARADOXES DOPPELLEBEN UND DIE EWIG NAGENDE QUEST was created, a story that switches between times and interweaves the historical with the contemporary or the present. Psyche, Eros, Daphnis, and Pan meet Chloe, the doubting creative soul who plucks up courage and opens up to the public.

The short story IN THE REALM OF WHITE SHADOWS followed in 2021. Chloe and Psyche enter a new space-time entity in which they ponder burgeoning conflicts from Mother Earth and the radical uprising of botanical cultures. In the process, both recognize their controversial approach and the fertilizing nature of their friendship. The REALM OF WHITE SHADOWS sees the light of day. Both short stories were published in the art book ANDREA LANGENSIEPEN.

The BURN-IN exhibition IN THE REALM OF WHITE SHADOWS refers to the short story and presents the relevant works in the atypical art space Gerngross in Vienna.

Andrea Langensiepen

Andrea Langensiepen

Andrea Langensiepen was born in Vienna in 1964 and worked successfully for many years as an art director for major Italian fashion labels. In 2006 she founded her own design agency in Tyrol and at the same time started a broad artistic education. Hubert Scheibl, Peter Casagrande, Prof. Markus Lüpertz, Prof. Hermann Nitsch and Prof. Christian Ludwig Attersee had a strong formative influence on the artist. Langensiepen is a passionate painter who has devoted her entire life to the question of how the new comes into the world. Her questions are complex. What is art? What is creation? What gives us the power to create the new? What is visible to whom, when and why? Which themes touch the individual, society, the artist? How do themes and art per se change in a temporal context?

Through this complex contemplation and its artistic realization, the empathic seismographer and authentic storyteller opens unexpected horizons marked by enormous creativity, professionalism and non-conformity. Imprints that were additionally fueled by her great uncle and academic painter Andreas Einberger and your eminent teachers, all great free spirits.

Langensiepen herself perceives art as the great secret of letting go, of breaking free from the usual interpretive framework, as the liberation from conventions and constraints. By crossing decisive thresholds, the longed-for entry into the creative rush of creation and activity (flow) succeeds, which is considered the ultimate element of creative design for the optimal fathoming of potential. Langensiepen describes this as her great journey, whose paths and goals she only recognizes when they reveal themselves to her, as a creative act, as an odyssey through all her realities.

In her preferred format, painting, she is able to pursue her enthusiasm for colors and forms as well as their composition in an open process. She detaches herself from the superficial, the visible and searches for what lies beneath the surface.

In her works, the artist approaches the painting layer by layer. There is no restriction to certain techniques or styles. The detachment from existing gives creative creations the space to grow. Her works are understood as an open process and are an uninterrupted series of departures and distortions.

Guided by intuition, impulsivity and an eye for detail, she succeeds in capturing the fullness of the world in the complexity of the composition. The transformation process that takes place is for her the perpetual search for answers to questions that have never been asked.

Langensiepen's abstract free painting takes us into the world of nature, mythology and happiness. Quite in the sense of Theodor W. Adorno merges here nature beautiful with art beautiful.

Since 2021 exhibitions in Austria, Germany and Italy.

Andrea Langensiepen lives and works in Ellmau in Tyrol.
