Juxtaposition

Exhibition 05. - 30.06.2018

contrasting juxtaposition!

Consolidated BURN-IN power from 8 exhibitions by 6 artists from the USA, Spain, Switzerland and Austria.

In the current, international June exhibition, the contemporary Viennese gallery boldly curates contrasting positions, creating the coherent juxtaposition.

The contrasting juxtaposition creates a whole new ambience in the historic gallery space that instantly enters into a dialogue with the viewer. The spatial "composition" exudes its charm and proves that the diversity of the artworks dynamically builds tension, activates and becomes something special.

DG Smalling

DG Smalling was born in Oklahoma and lived with his family in Switzerland, Cameroon and South Africa from the age of 8. He himself also describes the influence of European culture as decisive for his artistic development.

After graduating from high school in South Africa, he completed his studies in political science at the University of Oklahoma.

In his office in the Oklahoma Justice Building, he works at the annual Sovereignty Symposium and represents the interests of his Choctaw tribe.

Philomena Pichler

"The forest suggests listening"
Hermann Hesse

... and Philomena Pichler invites the viewer to see sensually. The self-taught Austrian painter was born in St. Johann in Tyrol in 1947 and received the Kölner Stadtanzeiger recognition award back in 1964. The lateral thinker then completed seminars with Prof. Opperer and Prof. Otte (Salzburg) and Prof. Gerald Nitsche (Innsbruck). Three semesters of lithography & lithographic printing with Mag. Doz. Wojtek Krzywoblocki, Mag. Lebzelter and Mag. Dr. Kodera (Vienna) completed his training.

Object art became an important element of his oeuvre. Abstraction and figuration complement each other and form a harmonious whole. The color focus is on yellow, red, blue, white and black.

Mischa Erben

Mischa Erben was born in Vienna in 1957 and has been working as a freelance photographer for over 30 years. In 1983, together with a group of young artists, he founded the Fotogalerie Wien (in the WUK) and was an employee and sometimes also director of the gallery. After several years of intensive collaboration, he shifted the focus of his photographic work to professional photography, working primarily as an architecture and portrait photographer, but always consistently continuing his artistic work, which has moved to the forefront in recent years.

Erben is pursuing four different artistic projects. ""Time into the picture"" Family portraits from 1993 to the present day, Tango/e/motion (people in motion, from 2011), the SAMENBANK project (fruit stands, from mid-2015) and NEVER/FORGET/WHY (memorial project for 15.000 Jewish children who were interned in Theresienstadt | from 2014)

The works presented in the exhibition originate from the SAMENBANK art project and show fruit stands whose dried shells often take on bizarre shapes. By placing them on a neutral background, he detaches them from their usual context and thus removes them from any size comparison. This allows them to appear as sculptures.

Erben has published numerous catalogs (Neue Fotografie aus Wien, Wiener Fotografie Teil 3, Zeit ins Bild |Familienportraits 1993-2013, NOW Fotografie der Gegenwart) and participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Austria and abroad.

Ästhetik der Körper I

Aesthetics of the body I

Ernst Platt

In completely clear, reduced oil painting, Platt presents his figures as if on a stage. The marble body forms appear tactile, almost sculptural, as in Greek sculpture in movement and counter-movement. Faces rarely appear, the anonymity of the figures is preserved. Although the figures are captured in their movement, they nevertheless radiate concentrated calm.
