[VER]BINDENDES | Reduced still lifes and moving water art

Exhibition 03. - 30.11.2015

Commissioned art | artworks in the depot
Object rental for events, educational institutions, science centers

In the November exhibition, BURN-IN ventures into completely unknown territory, staging itself in a completely new way and showing a YING-YANG machine, a pentograph, the seaweed experimental station, water veins flowing along the wall and gently swaying oscillating plants for the first time. A completely different kind of movement can be seen in the reduced still lifes, in which many things seem to change as in the seasonal interplay of nature, destruction and renewal. Homage to the hare, the hunting still life and fruity melons appear in a restrained symbolism with a critical approach. The artist Susanne Opdahl from Munich and the Viennese artist Gerhard Zsambok work with contrasting materials and in very different techniques. But they have one thing in common: curiosity and impulses from nature

When art, craftsmanship and science come together, wondrous objects are created that immediately captivate you and motivate you to be creative yourself. Use the sculptures as a source of inspiration for your company and focus on the artistic contrast between chaos and order and the calming effect of moving water.

BURN-IN offers works from the depot, project coordination for commissioned works and, for the first time, object rentals. You can find out more at the exhibition opening or in a personal conversation.

Gerhard Zsambok

Gerhard Zsambok launched a research project in 1988 that deals with the properties and abilities of water and has not only shown his kinetic objects in numerous exhibitions, but has also received prizes and awards for them. Based on drawings of his concepts, form and function dominate his water sculptures, which produce enigmatic, little-known phenomena and effects of water. His "magic of water" is based on the continuous renewal of flowing water without human intervention. Originally, Zsambok wanted to work with all elements, but because of the diversity of the material, he dedicated himself exclusively to water.

"Water can speak, grunt, laugh, it can fall silently, flow uphill, form patterns, organize itself, make things come alive, or juggle balls". This quote from Zsambok only becomes clear when you see his interactive water games, animated sculptures and magical water installations in the original. The artist's creativity is complemented by his scientific and technical knowledge, which he applies in a very special way to make each of his installations unique and a special experience. When Gerhard Zsambok has found the right constellation of forces, he creates seemingly impossible manifestations of water, which, flowing along steel plates, separates and meets again, forming narrow and wide paths and appearing in ever new forms without any intervention. The artist allows water to play with artificial plants in organic sequences of movement between chaos and order, a pantograph to write independently and balls to float. With movement, light and "water music", he sets the play instinct as a counterpoint to the perfection of today.

Simone Opdahl

Simone Opdahl studied graphics and design with a focus on painting at the Münster University of Applied Sciences, the Zurich School of Applied Arts and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts-Lausanne. She worked for the advertising agency Young&Rubicam in Bern and the advertising agency Publicies-Intermarco-Farner in Frankfurt. The artist lived in Oslo for three years before setting up her own advertising agency in Würzburg.

Opdahl received her artistic training at the Hohenaschau Summer Academy under Anton Petz. Since 2001, she has worked as a freelance painter with a studio in Starnberg. She has continued her successful career as a visual artist with exhibitions in Germany and Austria.

Opdahl prefers a spontaneous painting style in her oil paintings and leaves deliberately blurred traces. This flow of color points to the finite nature of the arranged still lifes and the subjects from nature as well as to the destruction and renewal of the painting process.

The original name of the still lifes in the 17th century was "fruit piece" and was later referred to as "nature morte" or "unmoved nature". The theme of nutrition and food production played a central role in the iconography of this period. It pointed to the economic problems of society at the time as well as to a staging of wealth.

In contrast, Simone Opdahl's reduced still lifes are by no means motionless. The things and fruits seem to live and change, to shift into a different consistency in a restrained symbolism or, like the hunting still lifes, contain a critical approach. Restrained, earthy colors radiate harmony and determine both the background and the motifs of the pictures.

The artist herself says: "For me, painting is a permanent search, a "losing oneself" and "finding oneself again".
